The Institute for Global Affairs Names Jonathan Guyer as Program Director

Feb 3, 2025

[New York, NY] The Institute for Global Affairs at Eurasia Group (IGA), a nonprofit research and education organization focused on geopolitics, today announced that it has hired Jonathan Guyer as program director.

Guyer will expand the work of IGA’s Independent America program, with a focus on interrogating the conventional wisdom of US foreign policy and informing the public about America’s changing role in the world. He succeeds Mark Hannah, who now serves as the institute’s chief executive officer.

“Independent America is IGA’s flagship program and I’m proud of the considerable impact its work has had over the past seven years,” Hannah said. “I’m thrilled Jonathan will be leading the program into its next chapter. IGA will benefit from his experience producing analytically sharp, rigorously empirical, and agenda-setting foreign policy journalism.”

Guyer is an award-winning reporter and former foreign correspondent who has published ideas-driven journalism for 15 years. As a senior writer at Vox, he covered China’s rise, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the Middle East after October 7. Previously, he worked as managing editor of The American Prospect, overseeing the magazine’s digital transformation. He has recently written for New York Magazine, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. His feature articles about President Biden’s and President Trump’s foreign policy teams and his investigations into the intersection of national security and tech have been recognized with national awards, including from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, Society of Professional Journalists, and Military Reporters and Editors Association.

“I’ve long admired the Institute’s crucial work of deepening debates through public polling, multimedia projects, and nuanced commentary,” Guyer said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to develop new foreign policy ideas to meet this complex moment.”

Guyer has been seeking out cutting-edge policy ideas since his early career work in the Middle East. As a 2017-18 Harvard Radcliffe fellow, he researched Arab comics and the politics of art in authoritarian states. He lived in Egypt from 2012 to 2017, where he edited the Cairo Review of Global Affairs and wrote for publications including The New Yorker, Harper’s, and Rolling Stone. He speaks Arabic and Hebrew, and is a graduate of Brown University.

The Independent America program will continue to be a core part of IGA as it expands and launches new initiatives. “I look forward to seeing what Jonathan does with the Independent America program,” Hannah said.
